Thousands descended on the western edge of downtown St. Paul to watch Canadian Kyle Croxall win the local leg of the Red Bull Crashed Ice downhill skating series Saturday night.

Despite the frigid weather and occasional flurries, the crowd began assembling along the quarter-mile Cathedral Hill course before the spectacle on sheer hills, moguls, jumps and an “ice wall” began. Police had no crowd estimates Saturday night, but sponsor Red Bull said 10,000 had turned out the night before for the elimination round.
